Jewish Film and Literature is an exploration and celebration of literature through the lenses of film, selected novels, and short stories. This course is about reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and representing. In life there are periods of momentum, where time flies by and utility tramples the stillness of your surroundings. Subsequently, there will be moments of stillness which blot out utility; through this class I hope to envelope stillness with imagination and consideration of the unperceived universe. Primarily, J.F.L is about appreciating the nuisances of literature and film through group discovery.
The instructor’s role in this class will be that of facilitator.
Be prepared to work hard and use time wisely in order to guarantee success in attaining a credit.
b) Assessment and Evaluation
50% of this class will be participation. This means that attendance is MANDITORY!! In other words, due to the extensive weight of participation in this seminar study, ALL absences will be docked from your final participation mark. Students can make up these lost participation marks by writing reflections on the material covered in class (200 words). The second element which composes the participation mark is positive involvement in class discussion. Those students who are instruments in creating an unsafe environment for creative freedom, or those who openly disrupt the class will either:
a) Be asked to leave and will forfeit their mark for said class.
b) Be asked to leave the class permanently.
c) Be required to write a reflection on the information covered in class, or be designated the class admin assistant and will take notes for other students on the material covered in class.
50% will be based on 2 personal (800 Word) reflection essays.
Participation Blogs (will count towards participation mark): Each class, one or two students will be required to write a blog/summery of what happened in terms of discussion and lectures; they will need to post their summery on the classroom blog. Blogs will be due the next class and will be read in the first 5 minutes by the student’s blogging. Student blogs are pass/fail, if a student submits an insufficient blog they will receive a zero or have to re-due their blog.
